I have some experience with Thai women, as well; I lived in Thailand for five years and took the ridiculous step of marrying a Thai woman after living there for four years and should have having known better, followed by the even more ludicrous step of taking her outside Thailand. This article is right on target. I'd only like to add two things:

1. I've tried to explain the concept of self-fulfilling prophesy to Thai women, even reasonably educated ones. The concept baffles them. It's relevant, because this is exactly what occurs: They believe that, inevitably, the man (probably moreso with foreigners [I refuse to use the racist and disgusting term Thais use]) will philander and ultimately leave them for a younger, more attractive woman, so they behave accordingly, thereby creating the very conditions that would drive anyone away, a moody, nagging, jealous, suspicious, ill-tempered partner. The man leaves, confirming their suspicions - yet it is the very conditions they create that causes the relationship to flounder. It appears to an observer as a form of stupidity, or perhaps insanity...

2. Thais are xenophobic to the extreme. Just try to get one to try any foreign restaurant. Westerners delight in a varied cuisine, Thais will go hungry rather than try anything unfamiliar. This attitude permeates their values and behavior, with predictable results: A Thai outside Thailand is a lost soul. So few of them travel; have you ever encountered a Thai abroad? This permanent inward-looking seems to me to be unhealthy...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
